The author’s early works are dramatic and intense, which later changed to calm and adult-like ones in their contemplations. The artist conveys these expressive emotions using lines, spots, and only a few colours, however not a single work of hers could be considered minimalist or primitive. Sigutė loves the subject of childhood and motherhood, and she has her reasons for it – first, she is interested in the national identity portrayed in Lithuanian artworks, and secondly, topics like these allowed the artist to avoid talking politics during Soviet years.
Sigutė Valiuvienė graduated from Lithuanian Art Institute in 1956, and has illustrated around 40 books since, most of which are very important to several generations of Lithuanians. Art critic Kęstutis Šapoka notes that those generations remember Lithuanian fairy tales and lullabies having Sigutė’s illustrations in mind.
