Aspazija Surgailienė

1928–2011
Stylising folklore was at the essence of Surgailienė’s work as an illustrator.
PASAKŲ SKRYNELĖ, 1961

She interpreted the traditions of folk engravings in her own way, disclosing drawings of bright contours in the process. The author empathised with the fairy tales and therefore combined her illustrations with vignettes and other elements from books to decorate the story using ornamental visuals.

From 1949 to 1957 she studied graphic art at Lithuanian Art Institute. Responsible for the design of over 70 books (mostly for kids), she also illustrated “Genys” [Woodpecker] magazine. In 1961 the artist received a bronze medal at the Exhibition of Folk Achievements in Moscow.
