Leonardas Gutauskas

1938–2021
This is one of those rare cases when the artist is both writing texts & illustrating them.
Leonardas Gutauskas, PAUKŠČIŲ TAKAS, 1986

What catches the eye here are ornaments shaped like cut-outs, and many works have stylised folk elements. This makes Gutauskas stand out among hundreds of others – his love and interpretation of ethno culture and folklore, along with masterful compositions and dynamics typically found within religious artworks. The author himself has noted that writing and drawing for kids is like saying a prayer – “the little ones are so gullible…”

Gutauskas graduated as a scenographer from Lithuanian Art Institute. He paints, writes texts and poems. Among a number of awards, he boasts a National Culture and Art Prize that he received in 2001, and the artist has been part of impressive international illustrators’ exhibitions, such as the ones at Georges Pompidou (Paris) in 1992 and Foz Palace (Lisbon) in 1995.
