Antanas Kučas

1909–1989
If you’d like to really get a feel of the old Lithuanian culture, just take a look at the artworks by Kučas.
Simonas Stanevičius, PASAKĖČIOS, 1959

“I believe that folk art holds the roots of our uniqueness. Only by building on its principles can we enter the wide world of art”, the author noted. And just like in folk art, the works of Kučas were dominated by the link between man & nature, bursting through ornaments and symbols while the creator used an expressive touch. His masterful carvings are a tremendous addition to a book’s story, allowing us to get to know the old Lithuania better.

Kučas was a professor at Lithuanian Art Institute, and his artworks are considered to be classics. 1969 saw him receiving the respectful title of Folk Artist, whereas in 1977 he was awarded the National Prize of Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic.
