Irena Žviliuvienė

1944
As dense as condensed milk, the children's illustrations by Irena Žviliuvienė are full of metaphors and poetic interpretations.
Algimantas Zurba, KO VERKĖ ŠAUKŠTELIS, 1973

The author doesn’t use imagery as just a reflection of the text – her illustrations are exceptionally deep, worthy of an independent evaluation. She manages to open up an illusionary space in her works, and the characters perfectly blend in with the symbols as well as other important objects in an indescribable movement of time.

Having studied at Kaunas Applied Arts Technical School, Irena graduated from Graphic Arts Faculty of Lithuanian Art Institute in 1971. Most art critics and researchers applaud her illustrations for the book “Gyvasis vanduo” [Lively Water], and she’s also a participant of numerous national and international exhibitions with more than one award on her resume. Books that she illustrated written by Martynas Vainilaitis – “Pelėdos giesmė” [Owl’s Song] and “Sidabrinė kultuvėlė” [Silver Paddle] – were included into the honorary list of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) in 2004 and awarded diplomas.
