Petras Repšys

1940
If we needed to describe this artist, perhaps the phrase “a curious reader” would fit.

Repšys’ illustrations often include a sense of immense storytelling, and they’re very fluently linked to the text. He uses energetic contours and doesn’t push his opinion on the audience, letting the precisely-drawn works tell the story themselves. Repšys spends a lot of time on small details, and that’s why his precise illustrations, meticulously created in a variety of techniques, resemble the works of a diligent jeweller.

In 1967 the artist graduated from the Graphic Arts Faculty of Lithuanian Art Institute, and mostly went on to work with the topics of history, getting inspired by Lithuanian mythology as a principle to explain the world. For this exact reason Repšys was often asked to create frescoes, reliefs, signboards, and sculptures for public spaces. He also worked on medals, exlibris, receiving a few national awards, among which is the National Culture and Art Prize.
