Edmundas Žiauberis

1932–1985
The artist was looking for semitones everywhere rather than plain black-and-white contrasts – not just in graphic art but also in daily life.
Ona Sedelskytė, UŽUOŽERIŲ ANTANIUKAS, 1967

Known for his concentration, Žiauberis was a student of precision and sensitivity, especially when using a carver to deal with linoleum or wooden plates. The artist wasn’t an admirer of vain ornaments and therefore tried to remain simplistic. His works feel rational in their composition, and the realistic drawings seem very lyrical.

Using the techniques of linocut, scraping, and ink drawing, Edmundas Žiauberis created genre compositions, portraits, landscapes, book illustrations, as well as drew cartoons and created the coat of arms of Kelmė, a city in Lithuania. The artist famously served as the art director of “Lietuvos pionierius” [Lithuanian Pioneer] newspaper and “Genys” [Woodpecker] magazine. 1982 saw him being awarded the title of an Honoured Artist.
